Feature · Buyer Personas

Your buyer isn't one person. Your AI visibility shouldn't be one number.

A CFO, an operator and an agency partner ask AI completely different questions about your category. They get completely different brands back. Truffle tracks each persona separately, against the prompts they actually ask, so you see which persona you own, which one is contested, and which one a competitor already owns.

Why persona-level matters now

Buyers no longer start on Google and click ten blue links. They ask an AI assistant a role-specific question and take the shortlist it gives back. A single "share of voice" number blends a CFO's ROI question with an operator's usability question into one meaningless average. When you average two audiences, you optimize for neither, and you never see that a competitor already owns your most valuable persona.

Gartner projects traditional search engine volume will fall roughly 25% by 2026 as buyers shift product research to AI assistants and chatbots. What persona-level AI visibility is

Persona-level AI visibility measures how often AI engines recommend your brand for the questions one specific buyer role actually asks, and how prominently. It benchmarks that against the competitors the role sees. You get a score per persona and a clear status for each, instead of one brand-wide number.

The three states of a persona

Own: you're the brand AI leads with for this persona's prompts. Defend it and cite it in sales.
Contested: you show up, but a competitor is ahead. This is where a focused content push moves the needle fastest.
Losing: a competitor owns this persona and you barely appear. Decide whether to fight for it or concede it.
AI Visibility Index (0–100): the per-persona score combining mention rate, average position and link inclusion across every tracked AI engine.
Generic share of voice

One brand-wide number that averages a CFO's ROI question with an operator's usability question. It goes up and to the right. It tells you nothing about who you're winning or losing, or which content would move it.

Persona-level visibility

A score, a status and a competitor set per buyer role. You see the CFO you already own, the operator you're contesting and the agency persona a rival has taken. You also see which prompts and competitors drive each one.

How it works in three steps

From a list of buyer roles to an own / contested / lose signal you can act on, without hand-building a single prompt.

1

Define your personas

List the buyer roles that matter: economic buyer, end user, channel partner, IT/procurement. Add a description, language and country, or let Truffle's AI draft them from your domain. Up to 4 on Starter, unlimited on Agency.

2

Truffle tracks each persona against the prompts it actually asks

Each persona gets its own prompt set and competitor list. Truffle runs those prompts daily across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, then scores mention rate, average position and links separately for every persona.

3

Act on the own / contested / lose signal

The persona view tells you where to spend effort: defend what you own, push where you're contested, and make a deliberate call on what you're losing. Per-persona recommendations point at the content and sources moving each score.

See every persona's score at a glance

The persona overview turns "how visible are we in AI?" into a per-role answer, with the exact metrics and the competitor set that persona sees.

Truffle buyer-persona overview: three persona cards for demo brand Flowmetrics — CFO/Economic Buyer scoring 78 (owned), End User/Operator 64 (contested), Agency Partner 41 (losing) — each with prompts, mention rate, average position and a competitor bar chart.

Read it in one glance. Each persona card carries its own AI Visibility Index, a status badge (green you own this, gold contested, red losing), and the numbers behind it: prompts tracked, mention rate and average position. Below that sits the competitor bar chart for that persona only: Flowmetrics leads the CFO with 78 over Vantage (61) and Cleardesk (44), trails Salespod on the End User (64 vs 71), and loses the Agency persona to Pipetrail (41 vs 68). Same brand, three different competitive realities. Illustrative data for demo brand "Flowmetrics."

The persona × competitor heatmap

One grid, a five-second read: which personas you own, which you're losing, and exactly who is beating you where.

Truffle persona-by-competitor heatmap: four persona rows (CFO, End User, Agency, Procurement/IT) by five brand columns (Flowmetrics, Vantage, Salespod, Cleardesk, Pipetrail), color-coded green for owns, gold for contested and red for losing, with Flowmetrics' column outlined in purple as 'your brand'.

Your whole competitive position on one screen. Personas run down the rows, brands across the columns; each cell is the AI Visibility Index, colored green (owns) / gold (contested) / red (losing), with your brand's column outlined in purple. The pattern tells the story instantly: Flowmetrics owns Finance and Procurement/IT, but loses the Practitioner persona to Salespod and the Agency persona to Pipetrail. That's a content and outreach roadmap you can hand to a team without a single spreadsheet. Illustrative data for demo brand "Flowmetrics."

The five-second read

A glance is enough. Green rows are assets to defend and quote in sales. Red rows are decisions: fight or concede. Gold rows are the highest-leverage work, where you already show up and one focused push can flip you into the lead. That's a quarter's worth of content and outreach priorities in a single screen.

Frequently asked questions

How does Truffle know which prompts a persona asks?
You seed each persona with a description, language and country. Truffle's prompt generator turns that role into a realistic set of buyer questions, phrased the way a CFO, an operator or a channel partner would actually put them to an AI. You can edit, add or remove any prompt. Every prompt stays attached to its persona, so the score reflects how that role actually researches. A generic keyword list won't tell you that.
How many personas can I track?
Up to 4 personas on the Starter plan and unlimited personas on the Agency plan. Each persona carries its own prompt set, competitor list and recommendations. See the pricing page for the current plan limits.
Does it work per country and language?
Yes. Language and target country are set per persona, so a German-speaking economic buyer and a US-based operator are each tracked in their own market with prompts phrased in the right language. That's essential because AI engines return different brands depending on the language and region of the question.
How is the persona score calculated?
The AI Visibility Index (0–100) combines three signals across every tracked engine: how often your brand is mentioned for that persona's prompts (mention rate), how prominently it appears (average position), and whether AI includes a link to you. The result is one comparable score per persona, benchmarked against the competitors that persona sees.
How often does it refresh?
Truffle re-runs each persona's prompts on a daily cycle, so every score refreshes once a day. The cadence is deliberate: AI answers are noisy from one turn to the next. A daily run gives you a stable trend you can act on instead of a number that jitters by the minute.
How fast do I get the first data?
Your first tracking run completes shortly after you add a persona and its prompts, so you'll see initial scores the same day. Trends and own/contested/lose confidence firm up over the following days as daily runs accumulate. Reliable directional signal typically lands within the first week.

Stop averaging your buyers. Start winning them one persona at a time.
